Chronic Kidney Injury & Its Complications

Chronic kidney injury (CKI) is like a silent ninja – it often progresses slowly, and symptoms might not show up until it’s in advanced stages. The kidneys, those bean-shaped wonders, are responsible for filtering waste and excess fluids from your blood, maintaining a balance of electrolytes, and producing hormones.

Now, when these ninja kidneys get injured over a long period, it’s CKI. Causes can range from high blood pressure and diabetes to infections and autoimmune diseases. The trouble is, the symptoms can be sneaky – fatigue, swelling, and changes in urination. As CKI progresses, it can lead to complications.

One major player in this game is kidney failure. When your kidneys can’t do their job properly, waste and fluids build up in your body. Hello, swelling and potential damage to other organs!

Another troublemaker is anemia. Kidneys produce a hormone that tells your body to make red blood cells. When kidneys are off their game, so is your red blood cell production, leading to fatigue and weakness.

Watch out for bone problems, too. Healthy kidneys keep your bones strong by balancing minerals. CKI can throw this balance off, leading to bone pain and an increased risk of fractures.

And let’s not forget the heart issues. CKI increases the risk of cardiovascular problems. It’s like a domino effect – kidneys weaken, heart has to work harder, and boom, heart problems.
