Acid Base Disorder
Certainly! Acid-base disorders involve disturbances in the balance of acids and bases in the body, which is crucial for maintaining normal physiological functions. The pH scale measures acidity or alkalinity, with a normal blood pH range of 7.35 to 7.45. The main components involved in acid-base regulation are bicarbonate (HCO3-), carbon dioxide (CO2), and hydrogen ions (H+)
Respiratory Acidosis and Alkalosis:
- Respiratory Acidosis: Occurs when the lungs fail to eliminate enough carbon dioxide, leading to its accumulation in the blood. Causes include lung diseases, airway obstruction, or respiratory muscle weakness.
-
Respiratory Alkalosis: Results from excessive elimination of carbon dioxide, often due to hyperventilation. Causes include anxiety, fever, or certain lung diseases.
